The families are not interchangeable, and the difference that matters most is optical geometry rather than price. Compound instruments (laboratory, student, teaching, inverted) pass light through a thin specimen on a slide and give high magnification of a flat field. Stereo instruments use two separate optical paths onto a solid object and give a three-dimensional, upright, correctly handed image at low magnification — which is what dissection, soldering and mineral work require. Surgical microscopes are a separate class again, built around long working distance and a clear operating field. Choosing on magnification alone is the most common specification error in institutional purchasing.

How do you choose a microscope for a school laboratory?

Match the instrument to the specimen and to the room, not to the magnification figure. For slide work at secondary level, a monocular compound microscope with 4x, 10x and 40x achromatic objectives and a widefield 10x eyepiece is sufficient. For dissection and whole objects, a stereo microscope is required instead. Check the power supply before anything else.

Four specification lines decide whether an instrument will actually work in a given room. Treat them as a checklist rather than a preference list — this is the Four-Line Specification Check used throughout the guidance below.

  1. Viewing head. Monocular for single-user school work; binocular for extended observation and reduced eye strain; trinocular where a camera will be fitted; multi-head where a demonstrator and students must see the same field.
  2. Objective set. Achromatic objectives are the classroom standard. Plan and plan achromatic objectives give a flat field edge to edge and matter for photography and for slide-scanning tasks. A 100x oil-immersion objective is only worth specifying if oil, and the technique to use it, will be available.
  3. Stage and focus. Sample clips are adequate for teaching; a mechanical stage with coaxial coarse and fine controls is needed for systematic slide searching. Stage travel, not stage size, determines how much of a slide can be examined.
  4. Illumination and power. See the section below — this is the line most often left out of tender documents and the one that most often makes an instrument unusable after delivery.

Why does illumination and power supply matter more than it looks?

Because a microscope which cannot be switched on does not function as a microscope. The laboratories which do not get continuous mains supply must use battery-operated or solar-powered LED microscopes. What is the difference between a compound and a stereo microscope?

Which microscope suits a pathology or histology teaching room?
